Lyons O’Neill have been the lead structural engineers with this interesting and challenging school extension in Greenwich. Working around an existing tube train, against an existing live school and over the running/go-cart track have allowed us to express our creative side in this scheme.
Working together with the design team, we were able to develop a scheme that utilises the structural frame to help thermally regulate the building. This then will reduce the running costs of the school and limit the buildings impact on the environment. Raking columns have been used to support the elevated sports hall and lecture theatre which also create a self-stabilising deck during construction. By using precast planks with ultra slim floor beams we were able to create a flat slab which can be quickly and accurately erected.
We have been able to develop the design to work around the needs of the school which will be fully operational during the construction process. By using the latest in modelling technology, we have accurately modelled both the existing and proposed services to enable careful phasing turn the upgrade, making sure that all services are live at all times.
